For a back piece, it ranges from 40 to 60 hours, depending on the subject, the size of the person, and the complexity of the design.How many sessions would that usually be?I typically cap sessions at 3 to 5 hours. So for a 60-hour back piece, you are looking at roughly 12 to 20 sessions total.

How far in advance do people need to book for a large-scale project with you?

At least 2 to 3 months before you want to start. That gives us enough room to develop the design and discuss the composition without rushing.

A steady flow is way better. I always recommend coming in once every two weeks. That interval gives your skin proper time to heal while keeping momentum so you feel real progress. If you stretch it to once a month or every few months, a large project can start to feel overwhelming.

Because we keep sessions around three to four hours, it is very manageable. Just get a good night’s sleep, eat a solid meal, and bring snacks or fruit to keep your sugar levels up during the session.

Do I need to know the exact cultural meaning behind every Japanese design before booking?

Not at all. You do not need a deep academic connection to an image beforehand. The connection comes from whether you love the visual. If you like it, go with it.

I look at your preference first, but the subject matter guides the logic. If you want a dragon, we can choose between water or clouds. But if the subject has a strict natural connection to water, like a koi fish, putting it in the sky simply does not make sense. I also keep elements in season, matching specific flowers with their natural time of year.

It is best to pick a single clear theme and stick with it. A common mistake is trying to crowd too many unrelated figures or stories into one piece. Keep it focused. On a basic visual level, you would never mix spring cherry blossoms with autumn leaves in the same piece.

It starts with where your body moves. I look at how the design aligns with your muscle groups so it never looks distorted when you move. Movement is key, where your elbow bends and where your shoulder sits dictate where the main focus and background elements land.

I love both. Most of my work is in full color, but black and grey is a great challenge. Black and grey requires more deliberate planning with contrast and shading to make sure every element stays distinct over time without relying on color separation.

A photo I saw as a kid of a massive rib piece on Scott Sterling, done by Ed Hardy. That single image opened my eyes to what large-scale tattooing could actually look like on the body.

It has shifted over time. Earlier in my career, it was classic Horiyoshi the 2nd, and later Horitoshi and his family traditions. Lately, I have been going back to my original roots: classic, bold 90s tattooing.

When we first opened, I brought a strict, super-traditional approach that I learned working in New York. Over time, I have allowed myself to play more with the rules, explore new themes, and take a more flexible approach to Japanese compositions.

Back pieces are my main focus. In Western culture, people often collect sleeves from different artists, which is great. But a back piece offers a single, uninterrupted canvas where you can create a truly powerful composition.

How do Japanese tattoos age compared to other styles over 10 or 20 years?

It ages as well as any classic traditional style. If it follows proper structural rules, solid black, clean negative space, and fully saturated color, it holds up exceptionally well and looks great for decades.

Accepted Answer

Yes, extremely well. Motifs with high visual complexity, like dragons, snakes, or koi fish, are ideal for cover-ups. The repetitive pattern of scales naturally distracts the eye from what is underneath. We can also use dark background shading over the old tattoo and leave clean skin in between, making the cover-up completely seamless.
